Symptoms we treat

Many women are told it's “just stress.” It deserves a real look.

Perimenopause vs. menopause

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, often starting in your 40s. Hormones swing, periods become irregular, and symptoms are often strongest here.

Menopause is confirmed after 12 months without a period, at about age 51 on average. Symptoms can continue for years, and treatment helps at either stage.

How Dr. Li approaches treatment

  1. An unhurried first visit. Your symptoms, cycle, health history, and risk factors like heart health, blood clots, and breast cancer history.
  2. Labs only when they help. Hormone labs may be ordered when indicated. Perimenopause is usually diagnosed by symptoms; labs can check thyroid function or rule out other causes.
  3. A plan that fits you. Hormone therapy (often starting with bioidentical hormones), local vaginal estrogen, non-hormonal prescriptions, and changes to sleep, nutrition, and strength training.
  4. Follow-up and adjustment. Reach Dr. Li directly while you find the right dose, instead of waiting months.

Common questions

Do I need blood tests to diagnose perimenopause?

Usually not. Hormone levels swing during perimenopause, so a single blood test often can't confirm or rule it out. Diagnosis is based mostly on age, cycle, and symptoms. Dr. Li will discuss whether hormone tests are needed based on your clinical picture.

Is hormone therapy safe?

For most healthy women under 60, or within 10 years of their last period, The Menopause Society finds the benefits for symptoms generally outweigh the risks. Dr. Li reviews your personal risk with you before recommending anything.

Do you offer bioidentical hormone therapy?

Yes. Dr. Li often starts with bioidentical hormones, which have the same structure as the hormones your body makes. Treatment is individualized, and for some women a different hormone or a non-hormonal option is the better choice.

Can I get menopause care without a full membership?

Yes. Menopause Care is $120 a month plus a $150 enrollment fee, in person or virtual. Once symptoms are controlled and dosing is set, you can end it and have your primary care provider continue your prescription. Full members get menopause care included.

Can menopause visits be virtual?

Yes. Menopause care at Windmill is available in person in Mechanicsville or by video.

Do you accept Medicare?

Not yet. Windmill can't accept patients with Medicare at this time, but hopes to in the future.
